Harmony in Heaviness: Unveiling My Top 3 Albums of 2023

Happy New Year Friends!

With 2023 fading away in our rear views, it's time to close the chapter on another year of highs and lows. Some of us are undoubtedly relieved to see the year's end, eagerly hoping for a brighter future. On the flip side, those who thrived in 2023 are looking to carry that momentum into the new year. Regardless of where you stand, one thing unites us all – 2023 was undeniably a awesome year for new music!

Personally, my musical tastes lean toward the dark, atmospheric, and heavy. I find myself drawn to a blend of melodic and harsh vocals, a combination that never fails to captivate me. However, with age, I've noticed a diminishing excitement for new releases from beloved bands. Thus, when I discover music that truly resonates with me, I wholeheartedly embrace it. This past year, some of my favorite bands delivered new music that exceeded all expectations, and I even stumbled upon a couple of new gems!

Now, I can almost hear you saying, "Oh, Pat, what were your favorite albums of 2023? We're dying to know!" Well, consider today your lucky day because I'm about to unveil my top three albums of the year, along with a few noteworthy band discoveries that may not have released new music but certainly grabbed my attention. So, let’s jump into that first!

New Year, New Playlist Additions

Traditionally, my musical explorations have been fueled by friend recommendations, live shows, and the rabbit hole that is Wikipedia. However, this year marked a shift with Spotify taking the reins in uncovering hidden gems! Yes, I’m aware that Spotify might not be the warmest embrace for artists (stay tuned for a future blog), but credit must be given where it’s due—it led me to a treasure trove of bands waiting to be discovered.

Now, let’s delve into my top musical revelation of ‘23: Palm Reader. Hailing from the UK, these post-hardcore virtuosos bring a darkness and moodiness that resonates with my soul. Spotify’s algorithm nudged me towards their album “Braille,” and while it’s more than commendable, it’s “Sleepless” that stole my heart. Imagine a fusion of Sleep Token, Dillinger, and late era Poison the Well, and you’ve got Palm Reader. It’s an interesting blend, but trust me, the musical alchemy is pure magic. If you’re a fan of heavier tunes from the early 2000s, consider this your golden ticket.

Moving on to my second discovery of 2023 that gripped my musical senses—meet Ithaca. This female-fronted metalcore powerhouse, also hailing from the UK, emerged from the depths of Palm Reader’s Spotify “Fans Also Like” section. No disappointments here! Ithaca delivers a potent mix of heaviness, aggression, similar to old Every Time I Die and Converge. Their 2022 album “They Fear Us” takes you on an emotional roller coaster, defying easy categorization. Trust me, you won’t find anything quite like them at the moment, and I urge you to hit play.

Alright, I think it’s time to unveil my top 3, don’t you think? I hope you ate your Wheaties today, cause it’s about to get heavy!

Top Three of Twenty-Three

Silent Planet - SUPERBLOOM

3. Silent Planet - SUPERBLOOM

Allow me to preface this by admitting I'm often fashionably late to the party when it comes to discovering new bands. Silent Planet, existing for over a decade, only entered my radar at the tail end of this year. Spotify persistently nudged me towards “SUPERBLOOM,” touting it as one of the top metal albums of the year, and I finally gave in.

From the first listen, I was entranced by the potent blend of heavy guitars, drums, and atmospheric elements that elevated the entire experience. The guitar work seamlessly transitions from unique, catchy riffs to heavy, Meshuggah-esque passages, creating an irresistible musical tapestry. Vocally, the dynamic interplay between clean and unclean vocals, coupled with catchy hooks, perfectly aligns with my preferences.

While Silent Planet may fall into the metalcore and progressive metalcore categories, their sonic palette transcends these labels. Ranging from industrial and djent to ambient shoegaze, they keep listeners on their toes, offering something for everyone. Sneaking into my top three late in the year speaks volumes about the impact they made in a short time. I'm eager to explore their older releases, and I highly recommend giving “SUPERBLOOM” a chance if you're seeking something fresh.

Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere

2. Johnny Booth - Moments Elsewhere

In contrast to my tardiness with Silent Planet, I've been a long-time listener of Johnny Booth. Since discovering their powerful and aggressive 2019 album, "Firsthand Accounts," I've consistently found their music to be both fun and loaded with angst and tension – qualities I love. "Moments Elsewhere" took their signature style to new heights.

Kicking off with the explosive track "2040," the album maintains a high-energy pace throughout. However, let's not misconstrue this; the songs, despite their high energy, are very dynamic. The guitars seamlessly shift from distorted heaviness to clean tones, creating suspenseful build-ups for subsequent surges of energy. The rhythm section, far from basic, ensures the songs remain interesting, with drums and bass acting as an undercurrent beneath the driving guitars and vocals. While the vocals often drift towards the grittier side, it's important to note that they are far from dull or lacking in emotion. There's an abundance of power behind the vocals, whether expressed through intense screaming or clean singing – each delivery is truly golden.

Johnny Booth, residing in the metalcore realm, extends beyond typical genre boundaries. Drawing influence from hardcore, their music reflects a diversity that appeals to a broad audience. Personally, I've witnessed people who don't typically favor heavy music enjoying JB. Their inclusion in my top three this year is no surprise, but "Moments Elsewhere" truly impressed me with its depth and emotion. Don't miss out on this gem; give it a listen!

Periphery - Djent Is Not A Genre

1. Periphery - Djent Is Not A Genre

If you're shocked by Periphery claiming the top spot, you shouldn't be! Like Silent Planet, I had heard whispers about Periphery for years before giving them a chance. Sometime in 2018-19, a song off P3 caught my attention and rekindled a musical excitement I hadn't felt in ages. Falling in love with P3, I proceeded to devour their entire discography.

"Djent Is Not A Genre" is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. A roller coaster of emotions from start to finish, it begins with the powerful "Wildfire" and only intensifies. The vocals stand out most to me, a notable feat considering I don't usually focus on them. Lead vocals, free from pitch correction, showcase Spencer's remarkable talent. Spencer unquestionably stands out as the most exceptional singer I've ever witnessed, whether live or on recordings. Consistently hitting the mark, he possesses an innate ability to craft vocals that perfectly suit the essence of each musical part.

Contrary to the assumption that metal equates to a relentless assault of heavy guitars, Periphery defies expectations. With three exceptional guitarists, the album's intricate and flawless guitar parts cover a wide spectrum. This album encompasses everything from the brutal 8-string heaviness that is "Dracul Gras" to the ethereal beauty of "Wax Wings." Witnessing them perform live, flawlessly executing each note amidst a seizure-inducing light show, is absolutely mind-boggling. A guitar masterclass from Mark, Jake, or Misha? Sign me up!

A detailed exploration of the drums is essential, given my primary role as a drummer. Matt's drums constantly amaze me, showcasing a swagger and groove seldom seen in others. The album encompasses everything from Dillinger Escape Plan-inspired blast beats to laid-back grooves beneath dramatic guitar sections. Picking Matt's brain during a drum class on their fall tour was a highlight of my year, inspiring me to incorporate some of his ideas into my own style.

After the album's release, there was a stretch where nothing else entered my ears. Periphery, in my eyes, stands as one of, if not the best, progressive metal bands today. Their embrace of a DIY approach to music is particularly admirable to me. If you haven't already, I urge you to give "Djent Is Not A Genre" a listen. Join me in raving about this musical journey that has defined my past year!

Music is subjective and personal, acknowledging that what resonates with me may not do the same for others. However, this year, I observed individuals I'd never expect to appreciate these albums becoming avid fans. So, even if you think it's not your cup of tea, take a moment to listen. You might surprise yourself, discovering music that moves you as profoundly as these albums moved me.

Happy New Year, and may your musical journey continue to unfold! Keep on listening!

Cheers,

Pat Casale
